This design incorporates a section of the Irish legend ‘Orgain Denna Ríg’(The
Destruction of Dinn Rí), which was a seat of power located in Co. Carlow. Believed to date from the 9th century, it is one of the earliest recorded Irish tales and is written in Old Irish.
The story goes that Labraid Loingseach grew up the son of the King of Leinster. However, his great uncle Cobthach was filled with jealousy, and murdered Labraid’s father, then fed Labraid his father’s heart. Traumatized, Labraid became mute, and was forced to flee westwards. However, he then raised an army and returned with a tribe of spearmen. They retook Dinn Rí with the help of Craiphtine who lulled their enemies to sleep with his harp playing.
Labraid then invited his great Uncle Cobthach to a feast, as a piece offering.
But it was a trick. When his uncle and retinue arrived, Labraid barred the doors to the room which was made from iron, and burnt down the building, roasting them alive. Hence, this was the destruction of Dinn Rí.
